Chapter 12

Bobby paced around the dorm room. When he'd returned to the dorms yesterday, he'd found a note on their board saying David would be back later. Bobby had been surprised since his roommate didn't go out much. And when he did, David always said where he was going. But Bobby figured David would be back before it got too late, hoped he would. Bobby was still upset over Friday night. He wanted to talk to David when he got back from work, to explain the slip he made about the scars.

When David glared at him Friday night, Bobby felt a new whole level of uneasy. He knew the trust he's been building with his roommate was fragile. Bobby wanted to get everything straightened out with David quickly, hoping he hadn't fucked up too bad. Unfortunately his skittish roommate hadn't gotten back until late Friday—a first—but that also meant they hadn't talked. Throw in the fact Bobby had to work in the morning and David was still sleeping when he left, Bobby hadn't even seen his friend since the parking lot.

He had assumed David was studying last night, something he often did when he finished up his lab work. Bobby didn't worry about when his roommate would get back to the dorm, but wanted to stick around so they could talk as soon as David returned, even when everyone went back out Bobby stayed in to watch a movie.

The movie ended with a no show from David. Bobby got anxious and called Jon, hoping the TA had seen David or they were out together. When Jon said no, Bobby stressed even more, saying he'd try David's cell. Bobby hung up on Jon pretty abruptly. But when he made the call Bobby just got shoved to voicemail, and getting David's voicemail was the last straw.

Bobby called Jon again, convincing the TA to call David, but the guy got voicemail as well. Bobby's chest welled up and panic set in, thinking David had gotten hurt. Still worried his friend was out there, injured or worse. Bobby thrust a hand through his hair and gritted his teeth. A headache formed at the back of his skull and his chest felt like it was tearing apart.

Did David not come back because of him? Was he hurt somewhere?

Bobby really hoped not. He finally felt he was getting through to David. Now their situation was one big mess. A knock at the door made him jump and his longtime friends walked though the door, Bobby looking behind them instinctively for David.

"Yo!" Austin called, stopping short when he caught the look on Bobby's face. "What's wrong?"

"David isn't back yet," he ground out as he paced. Chris and Austin glanced at each other. "And his cell is going to voicemail."

"Want us to wait with you?" Chris asked, walking into the room whether Bobby said yes or no anyway.

Relief swept through Bobby. "Yes."

Austin rubbed Bobby's back as he sat down next to him. "Did you give Jon a call?"

Bobby nodded and sank back into the lounge.
